The renowned actress of Albanian cinematography, Marjeta Ljarja is born in Pogradec on September 3, 1955. After graduating from the Higher Institute of Arts, she embarked on her acting career at the Pogradec Theater. She later married actor and film director Rikard Ljarja and, in 1979, was appointed to work at the People’s Theater in Tirana.

In recognition of her outstanding talent, at the 7th Albanian Film Festival in April 1987, Marjeta Ljarja received the Festival Cup for ‘Best Actress’ for her remarkable portrayal of Zana in the film ‘Difficult Start.’

From 1995 to 1997, she served as the Director of Art in the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports. After emigrating to Greece in 1997, she returned back in 2003.

Marjeta Ljarja has graced the theater stage with her talent, taking on diverse roles in productions like Dürrenmatt’s ‘The Visit of the Old Lady,’ Shakespeare’s ‘Richard III,’ ‘Two Gentlemen from Verona,’ and Teodor Laço’s ‘The Bells of Twilight,’ among many others. However, it was on the screen where her name shone as an actress with unmistakable talent, having played prominent roles in over 15 feature films.

Her career shone-brightly in 1978 with her debut in the film ‘There is Life in the Snowy Forest’ (Donika) and the same year with ‘Girls with Red Ribbons’ (Jeta Duro). She immediately stood out for her intriguing profile as a spontaneous and authentic portrayal, closely aligned with the complexities of life, where the characters’ inner motivations were palpable.

Marjeta Ljarja’s portrayal of Zana in ‘Difficult Start’ (1986) showcased her exceptional acting skills. She delivered a natural, fragile, and emotionally charged performance, skillfully navigating complex psychological relationships as a woman in love, a wife, and a stepmother.

In ‘The Circle of Memory’ (1987), her role as Margarita Begolli marked another pinnacle in her acting career. Unlike the role of Zana, here, she displayed dramatic and tragic tones, delving deep into the character’s extreme experiences, physical alienation, and the devastating aftermath of torture, as well as her journey toward renewal.

Marjeta Ljarja received the Festival Cup for both above mentioned film roles. Another impressive performance is her portrayal of Nerënxa in ‘Years of waiting’ (1990), where she skillfully creates a coexistence between two distinct upper-class characters she embodies.

In recognition of her artistic merits, Marjeta Ljarja is honored with the title ‘Deserved Artist.’ She is a well-known figure in Albanian cinematography, celebrated as one of its most successful names, and has notably distinguished herself on the stage with her exceptional talent to the film industry.
