Former Fin president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Martti Ahtisaari has passed away at the age of 86, Finland’s presidential office reports.

Ahtisari is remembered for negotiating the peace accords related to Serbia’s withdrawal from Kosova in the late 1990s, Namibia’s bid for independence in the 1980s, and autonomy for Indonesia’s Aceh province in 2005.

Ahtisari is the drafter of the plan for Kosova. In 2007, the former Fin president, Martti Ahtisari, who was the United Nations mediator in the Kosova status talks, drew up a document, ​​more publicly known as the Ahtisari Plan.

This plan regulates a range of issues, from those of culture, language, religion, tradition, but also education, health, economy and property, to the formation of municipalities with a Serbian majority, through the decentralization process.

President of Finland from 1994 to 2000, Ahtisaari also received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008 for his contribution to ending conflicts in Indonesia, Namibia or Northern Ireland.

When the Norwegian Nobel Peace Committee selected Ahtisaari in October 2008, it said the prize was given to him for his “significant efforts, on several continents and over three decades, to resolve international conflicts”.
