Meloni & Mitsotakis: Joint Commitment to Western Balkans’ EU Membership

Italy and Greece share a common goal for the Western Balkans’ EU accession. They will reaffirm this commitment at the European Political Community summit in Tirana.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made this statement in a press briefing with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, following the Italy-Greece intergovernmental summit.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in his remarks alongside Meloni, said, “This was not a formal diplomatic meeting, but an essential chance to coordinate our steps passionately on issues ranging from regional developments to migration.”

Mitsotakis emphasized that Greece and Italy are united by deep political, historical, and economic ties. They both face shared challenges in an increasingly uncertain world. He also called for more frequent High-Level Cooperation Council meetings.

“The joint declaration we signed reflects our strategic cooperation. We want to triple cooperation between our countries in electrical interconnection,” Mitsotakis stated.

He also referred to the agreement signed with Italy’s state-owned railway company. He called it significant, noting it marked the renewal of a relationship tested by the Tempé tragedy.

Under the agreement, Greece will invest over 400 million euros to upgrade its railway network and install modern security systems. Italy will contribute 360 million euros for new trains.
