Monograph on Usta Josif and Përmet’s Saze Tradition Presented in Tirana

The National Library in Tirana hosted the presentation of “Usta Josifi and the Saze of Përmet,” a new monographic study by author Niko Mihali dedicated to one of Albania’s richest musical traditions.
The book explores the urban folk music tradition of Përmet and focuses on the life and contribution of master musician Josif Shukollari, as well as other instrumentalists who have shaped this important cultural heritage.
Musicologist Holta Sina Kilica described the publication as a valuable contribution to documenting the saze tradition of Përmet. She noted that the study offers an in-depth analysis of Usta Josif’s artistic legacy while highlighting the role of musicians and ensembles in Albania’s musical life.
Meanwhile, participants recalled the contribution of legendary saze master Laver Bariu and emphasized how his artistic legacy continues through his students and followers. Speakers also highlighted the international performances of the Përmet Saze ensemble, which have introduced this musical tradition to audiences across Europe.
The book also documents the 2022 recording project featuring 18 songs by Hafize Leskoviku, performed by Adriana Thanasi and accompanied by Josif Shukollari and the Saze of Përmet. In addition, the publication includes a detailed catalogue of kabas and traditional dances performed by the ensemble between 1988 and 2025.
Composer Bilbil Hereni praised the monograph as an important effort to preserve the musical identity of Përmet and Albania. Similarly, National Folk Ensemble Artistic Director Sokol Marsi commended the author for documenting a tradition that remains a cornerstone of southern Albanian cultural heritage.
Academician Vasil Tole also welcomed the publication, stressing that it gives deserved recognition to Josif Shukollari and the Saze of Përmet. He noted that the study highlights the role of saze ensembles in shaping the famous Përmet kaba tradition, which forms part of the cultural heritage protected by UNESCO.
Overall, the monograph documents the history, repertoire and artistic achievements of the musicians of Përmet, while helping preserve an important chapter of Albania’s musical heritage for future generations.
