Musine Kokalari, born on February 10, 1917, in Adana, Turkey, was one of Albania’s most prominent intellectuals and the first dissident of the communist regime. Her family returned to Albania in 1920, where she completed her education, eventually graduating in Literature from the University of Rome.

In 1939, she published her first book, Siç më thotë nënua plakë. She co-founded the Social Democratic Party in 1943 and launched the newspaper Zëri i Lirisë in 1944.

The communist regime drastically altered her life. In 1944, her brothers were executed without trial. Arrested in 1946, she was sentenced to 20 years in prison, serving 16 before being exiled to Rrëshen, where she lived in isolation until her death on August 13, 1983.

Posthumously honored in 1993 with the title Martyr of Democracy, Kokalari’s legacy as a writer and dissident endures.
