The National Security Council meeting has ended after about 90 minutes at the Palace of Brigades. President Bajram Begaj called the meeting.

Thirteen heads of institutions attended the meeting. Discussions focused on national security and recent developments in the security institutions. Prime Minister Edi Rama, Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi and senior security officials also took part. The meeting included the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces and the Director General of the State Police. Acting State Intelligence Service Director Elvis Lila also attended.

According to RTSH24 reporter Rugova Dunisha, discussions also covered the situation following the arrest of former State Intelligence Service director Vlora Hyseni. Hyseni led the service for about three years. The participants also discussed the institution’s current situation and the expected appointment of a new director. A day earlier, Rama said he would discuss the new candidate with President Begaj.

The meeting followed Hyseni’s dismissal. She surrendered to authorities on September 22 and remains under house arrest. Prosecutors accuse her of supporting a perpetrator and revealing secret acts or data. Authorities suspect that she made classified state materials available to Ergys Agasi, who faces arrest over the case involving the National Agency of Information Society.

Meanwhile, Begaj has held separate talks with Acting State Intelligence Service Director Elvis Lila, Interior Minister Ervin Demo and State Police Director General Skënder Hita following Hyseni’s dismissal.
