Speaker of Parliament, Elisa Spiropali, paid tribute today to the memory of Dom Ndre Mjeda, who passed away on August 1, 1937.

Spiropali described Mjeda as one of the brightest figures of the Albanian National Awakening. She emphasized his contributions to Albanian culture and language, calling them powerful, rich, beautiful, and dignified.

“Ndre Mjeda’s work is a cornerstone in building our national identity,” Spiropali said in a social media post. “His voice awakened the suppressed consciousness of Albanians. He was a rare defender of our language and culture.”

As a teacher, poet, translator, cleric, and patriot, Mjeda served the Albanian nation with wisdom and deep devotion. His ideals reflected a passion for language, knowledge, and freedom.

Mjeda was also a member of the committee that drafted the unified Albanian alphabet during the Congress of Manastir in 1908.

Spiropali stated that Mjeda’s legacy lives on through his poetic verses—rich in musicality, elegance, and patriotism. She also shared one of his best-known poems, “Gjuha Shqipe” (The Albanian Language):

These tongues I hear around me speak,
Are rich in beauty, firm and deep,
Yet still, this one—like shadowless sun—
Outshines them all, to me, by far.
