New vision unveiled for Elbasan Castle as Albania pushes cultural revival

The first official presentation of the revitalization project for Elbasan Castle took place on Sunday, marking a major step toward transforming the historic site into a key cultural and tourism destination.
The event brought together Prime Minister Edi Rama, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports Blendi Gonxhja, Mayor Gledian Llatja and representatives of the Albanian-American Development Foundation.
Turkish architect Emre Arolat presented the project in cooperation with MVM Architecture.
Gonxhja said the project aims to restore the castle’s historic identity and archaeological values while reconnecting it with daily urban life.
“We want to turn Elbasan Castle into a new engine of economic and cultural development for the city,” Gonxhja said.
The project includes integrated interventions to improve public spaces and increase the tourism appeal of the historic area.
Authorities will now continue institutional procedures and coordination before the project receives final approval.
The Albanian-American Development Foundation is financing the drafting phase and providing international and local architectural expertise.
Elbasan Castle is a Category I Cultural Monument. Archaeological studies have revealed its Roman construction techniques and historical significance. The site also contains several protected heritage buildings and remains one of the most visited attractions in Elbasan.
