No consensus on new president: Osmani dissolves Kosovo Assembly, calls for new elections

President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, dissolved the Kosovo Assembly after political parties failed to reach a consensus on electing a new president within the legal deadline. Consequently, the country now heads toward new elections.

At a press conference, Osmani explained that she made the decision because the deputies failed to fulfill their constitutional obligations. She added that the situation could have been avoided, but political representatives prioritized party interests over the state’s interest.

Furthermore, she announced that, in accordance with the Constitution of Kosovo, she issued a decree to dissolve the Assembly and call for new elections. She consulted with political parties before taking this step.

“I am here before you because the representatives of the people decided last night to send the country to new elections. This situation was entirely avoidable. It is a great misfortune for this state that they did not prioritize the interest of the Republic of Kosovo. Therefore, today, in line with the Constitution, I issued a decree to dissolve the Assembly. Through this decree, I fulfill the constitutional duty clearly established. I issued a decree because deputies chose not to carry out their constitutional obligations. I also decided to call for new elections after consultations with political parties,” Osmani said.

Yesterday, the Kosovo Assembly session to elect a new president failed due to a lack of quorum. The number of deputies present was insufficient to continue the process, leaving the country without an institutional solution.

In the absence of proposals from other parliamentary groups, Vetëvendosje proposed candidates Glauk Konjufca and Fatmire Mulhaxha-Kollçaku. However, the vote did not take place because of the quorum failure.

Meanwhile, Vetëvendosje announced that it will approach the Constitutional Court of Kosovo to request an interpretation regarding the current political situation.
