Osmani Reflects on Kosovo’s Journey to Freedom at U.S. National Prayer Breakfast

Kosovo’s President, Vjosa Osmani, addressed thousands of attendees at the National Prayer Breakfast, hosted by the U.S. Congress in Washington.

Osmani underscored the ongoing threats posed by forces seeking to turn the world back by exploiting division, fear, and hatred to sow discord among people. “These are tangible dangers to freedom, challenging nations such as Kosovo, the United States, and others that have invested greatly in their progress,” she stated.

She acknowledged the leadership of the United States in championing Kosovo’s freedom, with the democratic world following in support of Kosovo’s aspirations.

Osmani also affirmed that Kosovo, as a sovereign state, embraces freedom, humanism, and faith, quoting the late President Ibrahim Rugova: “We believed in God, and this belief sustained us.”

She reflected on how Rugova’s words encapsulated not only a personal faith but also a national conviction: during times of oppression, their unwavering belief in God, freedom, justice, and their cause propelled them forward.

This year, the honorary co-chairs of the National Prayer Breakfast are Democratic Senator Maggie Hassan and Republican Senator Roger Marshall.

In 2023, the National Prayer Breakfast was split into two events: one in the Capitol, primarily attended by lawmakers and government officials, and a larger private gathering at a hotel with thousands in attendance. This division followed concerns raised by legislators over the organization and funding of the long-standing religious group behind the event.

In 2023 and 2024, Democratic President Joe Biden spoke at the Capitol event, with his remarks being broadcast live to the other gathering.
