Parliament Opens Session with Special Message Ahead of International Children’s Rights Day

TIRANA, November 19 – Ahead of International Children’s Rights Day, the Albanian Parliament opened today’s plenary session with a symbolic moment.

Speaker of Parliament Niko Peleshi invited Sofi Xhafo, a ninth-grade student from the public high school “Naim Frashëri” in Tirana, to co-lead the session briefly.

In his opening remarks, Peleshi said, “A young girl, an excellent student and representative of the growing generation, will join me for a few moments in leading this session. She symbolizes the reminder that every decision and debate here directly affects our children’s future.”

During her speech, Sofi Xhafo expressed excitement. She highlighted the importance of children’s rights. She said, “I am honored to be here with you. I used to watch this hall on TV, but seeing it in person feels different. Here, laws that shape our lives are made”.

She added, “Tomorrow is International Children’s Rights Day. It reminds us that all children, wherever they live, have the right to safety, education, play, and love. I ask you, in the name of all children in our country, to think of us, our future, and our dreams in your daily work. Children need to be heard and supported to grow happily”.

Sofi Xhafo also announced that female members of Parliament formed the volunteer group ‘Friends of Children’. The group includes 24 MPs. They will protect and promote children’s rights nationwide.

Speaker Peleshi concluded, “Parliament’s commitment to children remains a permanent priority”.

Earlier today, the symbolic moment, held one day before November 20, showed the importance of amplifying children’s voices. It also highlighted the need to protect their rights in all decision-making processes.
