Poland Assumes EU Presidency with Focus on Accelerating Albania’s Integration Process

Poland officially takes over the next European Union Presidency, succeeding Hungary after its six-month term. This transition is of great significance to Albania, as it is hopeful that the EU integration process will be accelerated under Poland’s leadership.
During Hungary’s presidency, Albania made notable strides in its integration journey. A Greek veto blocking Tirana was lifted, paving the way for the opening of the first negotiation chapters. In just two months, Albania succeeded in opening two chapters: Chapter 1 on “Fundamentals” and Chapter VI, which addresses foreign policy and defense.
Albania’s goal is clear: by 2025, it aims to have all negotiation chapters opened and to progress swiftly, with the aim of closing them by 2027.
On December 19, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski visited Albania and assured that Poland’s EU Presidency in 2025 would prioritize the integration of the Western Balkans.
In a statement to Albanian Post, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed this commitment. “Yes, Minister Radosław Sikorski spoke in Albania about Poland’s Presidency and especially the prospects for the Western Balkans’ EU accession and Albania’s negotiations (opening additional chapters). The minister emphasized that Poland is ready to offer legal and administrative assistance. He also pointed out Albania’s extraordinary progress towards Europe,” the Polish Ministry shared.
This clearly demonstrates that Albania’s ambitions are focused on the timely and swift opening of new negotiation chapters, with the goal of advancing as quickly as possible.
