President of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani sent condolences for the death of Dhimitër Anagnosti, the great master of Albanian cinema.

First, she described Anagnosti as a towering figure of cinematography. “His works remain in the memory of the public. They show his talent, dedication, and artistic courage. He gave dignity to art and reflection to society,” she wrote.

Then, in her official condolence telegram, Osmani praised his long career. She noted that Anagnosti enriched national culture and gave Albanian cinema an international voice. She underlined that his artistic courage and devotion will inspire future generations.

After a long illness, Anagnosti died at the age of 89. As a result, the Council of Ministers of Albania declared September 2 a national day of mourning.

Anagnosti was born in Vuno, Himara, in 1936. Later, he studied at VGIK in Moscow and graduated in 1960. His diploma film Man Never Dies, based on a Hemingway story, won First Prize in the Netherlands in 1961.

Next, he worked at “Shqipëria e Re” Kinostudio. There he directed, wrote, and shaped Albanian cinema. His most famous films include Red Poppies on the Wall, In Our Home, A Tale from the Past, and Gjoleka, the Son of Abaz. These films won awards in 1980, 1983, 1985, 2005, and 2006.

Throughout his career, Anagnosti received many honors. He won three Republic Prizes and three Cups of the Albanian Feature Film Festival. In 1987, he earned the title People’s Artist. In 1995, he received the Career Award.

Finally, Anagnosti also served in politics. He was a deputy in Albania’s first pluralist parliament. In 1992, he became Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports. In 2011, the President of Albania awarded him the title Honor of the Nation.
