Professor Roland Çene, “Great Master” and a leading figure in Albanian music and culture, passed away today at the age of 80.

Gjirokastër lost one of its most distinguished sons. Çene discovered and trained thousands of young talents who later joined orchestras, schools, and cultural institutions.

He left a lasting mark as a conductor, teacher, musicologist, and publicist. In 1968, he founded the Gjirokastër mixed choir and inspired generations of artists by establishing choirs and musical ensembles across Albania.

For his outstanding contributions, Çene received the titles “Merited Artist,” “Great Master,” and honorary titles such as “Honorary Citizen of Gjirokastër” and “Honor of Gjirokastër County.”
