Schieder Highlights Progress in Tackling High-Level Corruption

Tirana, October 29 – Andreas Schieder, the European Parliament’s Permanent Rapporteur for Albania, recognized progress in fighting corruption, particularly at the high level.

During the 20th meeting of the Albania–EU Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Committee, Schieder noted that depoliticizing the judiciary increases prosecutorial independence.

He referred to the European Commission’s 2025 rule-of-law report. The report emphasizes that depoliticization allows prosecutors to pursue cases without regard to status or political affiliation. All individuals are subject to prosecution when necessary.

Schieder said the report shows real progress in addressing high-level corruption. He added that many officials have been investigated, prosecuted, and convicted for corrupt activities. However, corruption remains a challenge.

He also highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in supporting anti-corruption efforts in Albania.

According to Schieder, corruption affects politics, the economy, and foreign investment. He emphasized the importance of the 2024–2030 Anti-Corruption Strategy.

The rapporteur highlighted the role of the Special Anti-Corruption Structure, a fully independent agency, in leading high-level investigations. Courts ultimately decide the outcomes.

Regarding OSCE-ODIHR election recommendations, he said Albania must address electoral reform, including campaign finance rules and related limits.
