Sorensen Appointed Special Representative for Kosovo-Serbia Dialogue

Peter Sorensen has received final approval from the European Union’s Foreign Ministers to take on the role of Special Representative for the EU’s dialogue focused on normalizing relations between Kosovo and Serbia.

On January 24, EU ambassadors had already confirmed his appointment. Sorensen, a Danish diplomat, was selected by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, to succeed Miroslav Lajcak in this important post.

With both the ambassadors and foreign ministers’ approval, Sorensen will officially begin his mandate on February 1, following Lajcak’s term ending on January 31.

Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon, speaking before the Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Brussels, emphasized that the appointment of Sorensen sends a clear message that the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue remains a priority on the EU’s agenda.

Sorensen brings extensive diplomatic experience to the role, currently serving as Senior Adviser for Digital Diplomacy at the EU External Action Service (EEAS). Throughout his career, he has held key positions in the Western Balkans, including EU Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Head of the EU Delegation in Sarajevo, and Head of the EU Delegation in Skopje.

Sorensen’s experience in Kosovo, where he worked with the UN Mission (UNMIK), and his role as Special Representative of the EU High Representative in Serbia, have further strengthened his qualifications for this important role. His prior work with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Croatia also contributed to his expertise in the region.

His wealth of experience in the Balkans was a major factor in Kaja Kallas’s decision to appoint him as Miroslav Lajcak’s successor.
