Spiropali: Proud that Albanians in North Macedonia are a key factor in Euro-Atlantic integration

At the invitation of the Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, Elisa Spiropali is hosting an official visit in Tirana today with the Speaker of the Parliament of North Macedonia, Afrim Gashi.
During the meeting, Spiropali emphasized that Gashi’s visit to Tirana, following her own visit to Skopje, highlights the close and ongoing cooperation between the two Parliaments.
“Cooperation between Albania and North Macedonia is a crucial step toward a safer and more secure future in the region,” Spiropali remarked.
She also emphasized Albania’s goal of joining the European Union by 2030, calling it an ambitious but achievable target. “This positive milestone for Albania should be seen in a positive light by the entire region,” she said.
“EU membership is a process based on merit, requiring the implementation of reforms and meeting EU standards, not influenced by other factors or circumstances,” Spiropali added.
She further noted that bilateral issues between EU candidate and member states should not become obstacles in the accession process.
“Albania hopes North Macedonia will soon hold its Second Intergovernmental Conference with the EU, as both our countries add value to the European Union,” she said.
Spiropali stressed the importance of bilateral cooperation in European integration, noting that creating joint mechanisms for exchanging information and experiences will improve the efficiency of reforms.
“Albania and North Macedonia are deeply committed to regional initiatives, such as the Berlin Process, which strengthens our economic, social, and political ties,” she added.
Spiropali highlighted the vital role that Albanians in North Macedonia play in governance and maintaining national stability, noting their critical role in Euro-Atlantic processes and the preservation of the country’s Western orientation and values. “This is especially significant in the current geopolitical climate in Europe and beyond,” she said.
She concluded by stating, “Respecting the Albanian language and the rights of Albanians is essential for the cohesion, understanding, and European integration of North Macedonia. We encourage a more favorable environment for economic cooperation and investments from Albanian businesses in North Macedonia.”
Spiropali also reiterated that “Corridor VIII is not just an infrastructure project; it is a major strategic initiative that promotes development, cooperation, integration, and security within the region and beyond.”
