Stano expresses EU’s concern/ Tensions between Kosovo and Serbia could have an impact even more widely in the region

The European Union has repeated calls for the preservation of peace in Kosovo, as well as to avoid the escalation of the created tensions. On November 5, the representatives of the Serbs offered to resign from the local level institutions in Kosovo, from the Judiciary, the Police, as well as from the Government and The parliament of Kosovo.

Peter Stano, spokesperson of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security, said at the press conference that tensions between Kosovo and Serbia could have a negative impact on the entire region.

He, answering questions about the fate of the Franco-German proposal for an agreement, and the latest developments in the north, said that “the priority is the reduction of tensions”
Stano has repeated the call to Kosovo to take immediate steps towards the creation of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority

“The EU wants to bring Kosovo and Serbia closer to a European solution, to reduce tensions and to engage in dialogue as soon as possible, because this is the only way out of the current escalation. This is the path that leads to the European perspective for both partners”, he emphasized.

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has said that the Serbs will not return to Kosovo’s institutions unless the Association of Serb-majority municipalities is formed.

Kosovo and Serbia have reached agreement on the Association in 2013 and then in 2015 on the principles for its establishment.

However, the Constitutional Court has said that some points of the agreement are not in harmony with the Constitution and has added that they can be harmonized with sub-legal acts from the Government of Kosovo.

The Government of Kosovo has declared against a single-ethnic association.

Stano also spoke about the EU’s concern that the tensions between Kosovo and Serbia could have an impact even more widely in the region.
