Statue of Former President Rugova Unveiled in Podujevë

On the 34th anniversary of the adoption of the Kaçanik Constitution, the statue of former President Ibrahim Rugova was unveiled in the city of Podujevë.

In addition to numerous citizens, the unveiling was attended by state leaders.

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani described Rugova as the architect of the state, noting that he is now “returning to Llapi in bronze,” becoming an eternal resident of the municipality.

She emphasized that the Kaçanik Constitution marks a historic moment in Kosovo’s journey toward freedom.

Osmani stated that the statue is not just a work of art but also a testament to the ideals Rugova, according to her, worked for until his death for a free and democratic Kosovo.

She highlighted that President Rugova remained steadfast in his vision even during Kosovo’s darkest days.

Foreign Minister Donika Gërvalla noted that President Rugova remained true to his principles during the 1990s, throughout the war, and even after Kosovo’s liberation.

She added that Rugova’s clear vision, wisdom, depth of thought, and persistence saved the people of Kosovo from fierce political rivalry aimed at dismantling the country’s statehood.

Former President of Kosovo, Fatmir Sejdiu stated that Rugova, considering freedom as a fundamental and humane value, succeeded in achieving it.

Sejdiu mentioned that with his civilizing culture and image, President Rugova became an inspiration for the Albanian people.

Podujevë Mayor Shpejtim Bulliqi said that the unveiling of Rugova’s statue is an everlasting tribute to the man who wisely, resiliently, and with vision led Kosovo toward freedom and independence.

In a brief speech, Rugova’s son, Ukë Rugova, congratulated sculptor Gëzim Muriqi for creating the statue and discussed its significance.

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti was also present at the event.
