The National History Museum commemorated today, on the 103rd anniversary of his birth, the historian Kristo Frashëri.

Historian, professor, academic, Kristo Frashëri was born in Istanbul on December 4, 1920. In 1927, together with his family he returned in his homeland, settling in Tirana. In 1940 he enrolled in the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Florence. During 1942 he was sent in exile by the fascist occupation administration and in 1943 he joined the partisan ranks of the WWII Albanian Resistance. During the period 1945-1952 he worked at the Albanian State Bank. He attended higher studies at the Faculty of History and Philology, at the Higher Pedagogical Institute, in the years 1951-1955. During the years 1953-1999 he worked in several important institutions, where he served as a scientific researcher in the Institute of Sciences, in the Institute of History and Linguistics, in the Faculty of History and Philology of the Tirana State University and in 1997 he was appointed vice president of the Academy of Sciences of Albania, where he stayed until 1999.

Kristo Frashëri has a rich scientific production, which extends to all periods of Albania’s history, from Antiquity to the present day. He has published dozens of study articles, historical reports, documentary volumes and scientific monographs, which without exception deal with events, personalities and processes of the history of Albania. Among them are the essays to illuminate the Albanian haze during the early Middle Ages, the medieval feudal order in the Albanian area, the medieval state formations, the features of the Ottoman feudal regime in Albania, the Albanian National Renaissance, The liberation war of Vlora (1920), the life and activity of Abdyl Frashëri, Sami Frasheri etc. After 1990, he published a number of scientific works, such as: “The League of Prizren 1878-1881” (Tirana, 1997); “George Kastioti Skanderbeg, Life and Opera” (Tirana, 2002); “The History of Tirana” (Tirana, 2004); “History of the left movement in Albania” (Tirana, 2006); “Skanderbeg in the Albanian documentary sources of century XV” (Tirana, 2005); “National Identity of Albanians” (Tirana, 2006); “Albanian Historiography in Transition” (Tirana, 2006);”Proclamation of Independence of Albania, November 28, 1912″ (Tirana, 2008); “History of Albanian Civilization” (Tirana, 2008).

Kristo Frashëri, as a professor of the history of Albania at the Tirana State University and as a scientific researcher, gave a special contribution to the preparation of young historians. He passed away on January 31, 2016, in Tirana.
