Vangjel Koja, the legend of Albanian volleyball, has passed away at the age of 91.

Vangjel Koja’s name is firmly etched in the memory of sports enthusiasts and beyond, as one of the symbolic figures of Albanian volleyball. The news was announced by his son, Orlando Koja, the coach of the girls’ volleyball team of “Skënderbeu.”

Vangjel Koja began his career as an athlete, later transitioning to basketball and volleyball, ultimately becoming the coach of the men’s volleyball team of “Dinamo,” which was the absolute champion from 1964 to 1990 and reached the top four in Europe.

He contributed significantly to this team, winning 23 championship titles and 17 Republic Cups, leaving a mark in European competitions as well. His passion for volleyball was inherited by his son, Orlando, who honors his father’s name. Even in his advanced age, he continued to nurture the same passion as in his youth, attending stadiums whenever there were important matches.

Tributes will be held this morning at the Church of St. Sotir in Korçë, followed by a final farewell to the legend of Albanian volleyball.
