The Mosaic ‘Illyria’ in Pogradec Represents 2500-Year-Old Illyrian History in Lower Selca

Renowned painter from Pogradec, Anastas Kostandini has created a mosaic on the central facade of the Pogradec City Hall building titled “Illyria.” This mosaic represents the 2500-year-old Illyrian history in Lower Selca, where tombs of Illyrian kings are located, and where the already famous “plate” was reproduced in the mosaic.

“Pogradec is a place of great archaeological findings and known for the tombs of Illyrian kings. Pogradec has a modest museum, mostly of archaeology findings, which is a telling sign of our heritage,” says the painter.

According to Pogradec Mayor, Ilir Xhakolli, the realization of such a mosaic is one of the works that the city was missing, echoing one of the earliest ages.

“We tried to bring an iconic part of Pogradec, such as the ‘plate’ of Selca, found in the tombs’ area of Selca with a history dating back to the 4th century [BC], and it is certainly a noble symbolism that Pogradec City Hall has to show the ancient history it holds,” stated the Mayor.

Anastas Kostandini, along with other authors, was part for the creation of this mosaic in the National History Museum in Tirana, and this is the first mosaic he has created it for the town of Pogradec by Lake Ohrid.
