From this Friday (August 4), the reduction of the presence of the Kosovo Police in municipal facilities in the north begins. The news was announced by the Minister of the Interior Xhelal Zveçla who informed that the decision came after the meeting held by the Kosovo Police with EULEX and KFOR.

“Kosovo Police held a meeting with EULEX and KFOR, as foreseen by point 2 of the Bratislava agreement.

The conclusion of the joint security assessment is that the situation is calm. From today we will reduce the presence of the police by 25% in and around the municipal buildings”, said Zveçla in a post on the Twitter social network.

Meanwhile the envoy of the European Union for the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Miroslav Lajcak, has assessed the reduction of the police in the north of the country as an important step. 

He welcomed the joint assessment between the Kosovo Police, EULEX and NATO for the situation in the north, while he emphasized that this is a decision in accordance with the Bratislava agreement between him and Deputy Prime Minister Besnik Bislimi.

“This is an important step towards the complete de-escalation of tensions in the north of Kosovo”, writes Lajçak on “Twitter”.

The Kosovo Police announced  that in the wake of the implementation of constitutional and legal duties and authorizations in the interest of public safety in the country, as well as with the aim of implementing the agreement reached in Bratislava on July 10, 2023, between the European Union and Kosovo, the reduction of police forces in the north has been decided.

“According to the joint assessment, by the Kosovo Police, EULEX and KFOR, the security situation in and around the facilities of the northern municipalities is estimated to be good. In the sense of this joint finding, from today the reduction of the members of the Kosovo Police by 25%, in and around the municipal facilities in the north, will begin,” the announcement reads.
