The trial in The Hague against the former leaders of the KLA, Sunday Times writes: They are heroes of Kosova

The judicial process initiated against the former leaders of the Kosova Liberation Army Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi has attracted the attention of the British media too.

The weekly “The Sunday Times” in a long article dedicated to this process started in The Hague since the establishment of the Special Court, where the former leaders of the KLA are accused.

Referring to this process, the Sunday Times points out that NATO’s intervention in Kosova in March 1999 was a response to war crimes and Serbian atrocities against the Albanian people of Kosova.

“They are national heroes of Kosova, now accused of war crimes,” while explaining how British and American leaders, such as former Prime Minister Tony Blair and former President Bill Clinton,” are honored as heroes in Prishtina.

“In a small country where Blair and Clinton are idols, NATO’s success story is threatening to become very bitter,” writes “The Sunday Times”.

The Prime Minister of Kosova, Albin Kurti, is also quoted in this article. He says that the people of Kosova will never forget the role of the United Kingdom in the liberation of Kosova and NATO’s intervention of course.

“We will never forget the special role that the United Kingdom had in NATO’s intervention to stop the Serbian genocide,” Kurti is quoted, adding that – “I hoped that the former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, would come to Kosova to celebrate the Liberation Day.

After the publication of this article, Prime Minister Kurti also shared it on his Twitter account, announcing that he had a conversation with its author, journalist Matthew Campbell.

“It’s a pleasure to speak with Matthew Campbell for today’s article. We discussed Kosova’s gratitude to Great Britain, the risk that Serbia will use the Specialized Chambers to rewrite history and Russia will see the Balkans as a front against NATO,” Kurti wrote.

In this interview for “The Sunday Times”, Kurti also raises the alarm that the judicial process could make Serbia “rewrite history”.

“I support accountability for the war. However, it seems unfair to me that Kosova is being put in the center of attention, while Serbia has not only refused to take responsibility for the crimes, but also denies them,” Prime Minister Kurti is quoted as saying.

The “Sunday Times” writes that Serbian forces were responsible for the vast majority of atrocities in Kosova. He adds that some of them were tried at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, but most of those responsible for ethnic cleansing, rape and other crimes in Kosova have never been convicted.
