The UN General Assembly will vote today on the resolution on Srebrenica

The United Nations General Assembly will vote today (May 23) on a resolution proposal regarding the genocide in Srebrenica. The debate is expected to commence at 16:00.

The proposed resolution aims to designate July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide. It also condemns “any denial of the Srebrenica genocide” and actions that glorify those convicted of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide by international courts, including those responsible for the Srebrenica massacre.

The resolution also calls for further prosecution of those responsible and emphasizes the importance of seeking and identifying other possible victims.

The document is co-authored by many countries, including Austria, Albania, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, North Macedonia, France, Croatia, Finland, Estonia, and Sweden.

At least 100,000 people were killed in the Bosnian War of the 1992-1995 period, where the Srebrenica massacre is recognized as the most tragic moment of the conflict. More than 50 individuals were sentenced to over 700 years in prison for the committed genocide, including the president at the time of the Republika Srpska, Radovan Karadžić, and the former Serbian army general, Ratko Mladić.
