Today, the world celebrates Mother Teresa. Around the globe, people honor her legacy. Albanian heritage shaped her childhood.

For example, her words still inspire millions. Communities reflect on her message each year. She once said: “I always keep my Albanian people in my heart. I prayed to God that his peace comes to our hearts, to all our families, to the whole world. I prayed a lot for my poor, and for me and my sisters. I pray for you”.

Gonxhe Bojaxhiu entered life on August 26, 1910, in Shkup/Skopje. At that time, Skopje belonged to the Kosova Vilayet in the Ottoman Empire. Childhood unfolded in Shkup . Later, Ireland became her home. Afterward, India welcomed her. Most of her adult life passed there.

Her vision led to the founding of the Missionaries of Charity. By 2012, more than 4,500 sisters had joined the order. Furthermore, they worked across 133 countries. In addition, sisters cared for the poor and sick.

Recognition followed dedication. The Ramon Magsaysay Peace Award honored her in 1962. Later, the Nobel Peace Prize came in 1979.

The Church beatified her on October 19, 2003. At that moment, it called her “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.” Canonization required a second miracle. Then, Pope Francis confirmed it in December 2015. Consequently, the Church canonized her on September 4, 2016. The next day marked the 19th anniversary of her death. Since then, that date serves as her feast day.

Life reflected service and human dignity. Daily devotion guided her actions. The Missionaries of Charity helped the homeless, sick, and orphaned. Every person received respect. Social status never mattered. Illness or religion never mattered. Moreover, compassion accompanied practical help. In addition, moral responsibility shaped every decision. Even the most marginalized received care.
