EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Oliver Varhelyi says the Western Balkans should be part of the EU. He called on Bulgaria to approve the proposal to pave the way for the opening of negotiations for Albania and North Macedonia.

“The EU takes all Bulgarian concerns very seriously and now they are part of the negotiation process. The moment for responsible decisions is now. The Western Balkans must be part of our European Union. Together we will be stronger.

We call on the Bulgarian Parliament and all parties to fulfill their commitment and put forward the proposal for Albania and North Macedonia, for approval today as proposed earlier.

Bulgarian opposition leader Boyko Borissov has already shown leadership by putting the proposal on the table. We need everyone to do the same. The EU must move, ‘writes Varhelyi.
