Varhelyi: The next European Commission will focus on the expansion of the Western Balkans

The next European Commission will be the enlargement commission, declared the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, at the end of a meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
For Varhelyi, the next EU commission will have all the tools to get results in terms of enlargement.
“But it is up to the leaders of the Union to take a stand on this issue. I think that we will move forward, that it should be an irreversible process”, said the commissioner in response to the journalists.
“The doors of the European Union are open to welcome new member countries and it is possible that this will happen after five years, within the mandate of the new commission”, he added.
However, he did not specify whether he was referring to group membership or individual Balkan countries.
“We have to restore the momentum. We must not waste time. A precise economic investment plan has been developed to support the growth of the Western Balkans. All this is a clear signal that the EU is ready to welcome new members”, added Varhelyi.
