Venetian Mask Celebrations in Shkodër

February marks the start of carnival celebrations with colorful masks.

Each year, the carnival date changes based on Easter, which falls on April 5 this year for Catholics. Carnivals usually take place 70 days before Easter.

Carnivals have ancient roots. The tradition started with the Egyptians, who honored the goddess Isis by wearing masks. However, modern carnivals come from Christian traditions. They celebrated a final feast, mostly with meat, before the start of Lent.

Today, carnivals are colorful and playful. People of all ages enjoy them worldwide. Famous examples include Rio and Venice, where millions of tourists gather annually for masked festivities.

In Shkodër, carnival traditions date back to 1860. They are a key part of the city’s cultural and urban life. The events are known for masks, costumes, and artistic performances. They preserve artisan skills and the creative spirit of the community.

Venetian masks are listed in the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. They symbolize cultural identity and are passed down through generations.

This year’s activities highlight these traditions. They connect historical carnival customs with artisan practices and intangible cultural heritage.

With support from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sports and the Shkodër Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage, Shkodër will host workshops on Venetian masks, embroidery, costume styling, and carnival fashion shows on February 10 and 11.
