Viktor Stratobërdha: Filmmaker’s career remembered in Tirana

The life and work of Albanian filmmaker Viktor Stratobërdha (1925–2000) took centre stage at a film event in Tirana. The event examined the career of an artist whose creative work lasted only 13 months before the communist regime cut it short.

The Authority for Information on Former State Security Documents and the Central State Film Archive organised the event through the educational platform “Learning from the Past 1944–1991.” Researchers, filmmakers, journalists, archivists and family members examined Stratobërdha’s films alongside archival documents and personal memories.

Stratobërdha trained in film directing in Moscow and worked as an assistant director on “Skënderbeu” film. He later directed the documentaries “Happy Holidays” and “Congratulations, Comrade Students.” In 1955, he began the short film “We Laugh Because We Cannot Cry,” but authorities censored the project. Three surviving episodes remain in the film archive under the title “Why So?”

Meanwhile, archival documents showed that State Security produced around 600 pages on Stratobërdha. The filmmaker twice refused to cooperate with the security service. Authorities later interned and imprisoned him. Family members also recalled the impact of his persecution on his wife and children. The event called for renewed recognition of his work and its place in Albanian cinema history.
