European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she will visit Emin Duraku School in Tirana tomorrow with Prime Minister Edi Rama. The EU supported the school’s reconstruction after the 2019 earthquake.

At a joint press conference with Rama, von der Leyen recalled the EU’s support for Albania after the devastating 2019 earthquake.

“Dear Edi, tomorrow morning we will have the pleasure of visiting Emin Duraku School. I remember those days in 2019, when the devastating earthquake hit Albania. They were terrible days. I told you that Europe would stand by your side. And we did,” she said.

Von der Leyen described the EU school reconstruction program as a concrete example of European solidarity and cooperation with Albania.

“I really like the EU school program. It represents one of the most tangible programs and one of the clearest examples of this solidarity and cooperation,” von der Leyen said.

Through the program, the EU has helped rebuild or renovate 63 schools across Albania.

“These schools, including Emin Duraku School, now welcome and educate a new generation of Europeans,” von der Leyen said. She added that she looked forward to visiting the school the following day.
