Von der Leyen: Prishtina to implement the Association, Serbia to de facto recognize Kosova

The EU expects Kosova and Serbia to work on the normalization of bilateral relations and that each side releases something to advance the relationship.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen stopped in Prishtina this Monday as part of her Balkan tour to acquaint the countries of the region with the EU’s plans for integration, the 30 billion USD of investments and for the economic growth of the Western Balkans.

During her stay in the Kosovan capital, meeting President Vjosa Osmani, she stated:

“We invite Kosova to start the procedure for the implementation of the Association, while Serbia must accept the de facto recognition. This is the only way to move forward. Even in Serbia I will discuss the steps that Serbia must take for de facto recognition,” said the EC president at the joint press conference.

Ms. Von der Leyen reiterated that she does not agree with the violent attack on September 24 that took place in Banjska of Zveçan.

“We strongly condemn the violent attack on September 24 and express our condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the murdered police officer. Such an attack is completely unacceptable and the perpetrators must be brought to justice.

The EU is committed to the future of the Balkan countries as part of the Union. Kosova has made a very stable progress. We congratulate you on your work and effort to strengthen democracy. There is a lot of work to be done, but I assure you that we will cross this road together. I remember last year when we both called for visa liberalization. This year we almost made it. From January 1, citizens of Kosova will enjoy free movement in the EU. It is an important cornerstone for strengthening our relations,” said the EC president in Prishtina.
