11 Years Since Pope Francis’ Visit to Tirana

Today marks 11 years since the historic visit of Pope Francis to Tirana on 21 September 2014. It was also his first official visit after being elected to the papal throne of Saint Peter.

The Pope stayed in Tirana for nearly 12 hours. His presence gave Albania major international attention as a model of peaceful coexistence and cooperation among different faiths.

Albania was the first country in Europe chosen by Pope Francis to visit. His program began with an address at the Presidency. Later, he celebrated Holy Mass in Mother Teresa Square.

Tens of thousands of Albanians from all faiths gathered to welcome him.

During his time in Tirana, the Pope celebrated Mass, strengthened the Catholic community in faith, and encouraged interfaith dialogue for the common good. He also called on the people to continue their democratic path in a country where Muslims form the majority.

One of the most symbolic moments came when Pope Francis embraced two survivors of the communist persecution, Father Ernest Simon (later Cardinal) and Sister Maria Kaleta. He also met with children from the Betania Center, where nuns still care for those in need.

The visit remains a milestone in Albania’s recent history, remembered as a testimony of faith, unity, and dialogue.
