144th anniversary of the establishment of the Albanian Printing Society in Istanbul

On October 12, 1879, the Albanian Printing Society was established in Istanbul under the initiative of the Central Committee for the Protection of the Rights of Albanians.

Sami Frashëri served as the Chairman of the Society, and its members included a group of prominent patriots of the time, among them some of the most renowned figures of the Albanian Renaissance, such as Abdyl Frashëri, Pashko Vasa, Jani Vreto, Hasan Tahsini, Koto Hoxhi, Zija Prishtina, and others.

The primary goal of the Society, as indicated by its name, was the printing and distribution of Albanian books. Following the prohibition of the Society’s activities by the Ottoman authorities, its headquarters were relocated to Bucharest. In 1886, a printing press was established in Bucharest for the specific purpose of printing Albanian books.

Using the Istanbul alphabet, Sami Frashëri authored and printed several books, including “Abetare e gjuhës shqip” (1886), “Shkronjëtore e gjuhës shqip” (1886), “Dheshkronjë” (1888).

The initial works of Naim Frashëri, which hold a prominent position in 19th-century Albanian literature, were also printed in the same printing house.
