47-Coin Treasure Discovered Near Ballsh Monastery Unveiled

Archaeologists found an extraordinary collection of 47 coins dating back to the 13th century at St. Mary’s Monastery in Ballsh. Experts call this a true treasure because of the coins’ unique designs and their strong ties to the monastery’s history.
Some coins are already restored, while others remain in the restoration process. The coins show clear images of emperors and well-known saints from that time.
Restorer Frederik Stamati presented the treasure at the Archaeological Institute. He said the restoration required careful and delicate work to make the coins readable.
The collection includes Byzantine copper coins and offers valuable insight into medieval monetary policy. This find sheds new light on an important historical period.
The restored coins will go on display at the Archaeological Museum in Tirana.
