50 Years of Albania-Mexico Diplomatic Relations Celebrated Through Symbolic Alebrije Sculpture

The 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Albania and Mexico was marked with a specially created sculpture. This artwork, inaugurated during Mexican Cultural Week, is an alebrije sculpture titled The Monarch Child.

The piece features a fusion of an Albanian goat and a migrating monarch butterfly, symbolizing the friendship between the two countries through elements from their respective fauna.

Decorated with acrylic paints, the sculpture incorporates motifs from the traditions of both nations, including elements inspired by Albanian craftsmanship and the traditional xhubleta dress, as interpreted by artist Ricardo Macías, as well as Mexican Otomi embroidery.

Irena Prici, Director of Cultural Development Policies, stated to the media that Mexico is a new participant in Cultural Week. “Mexico shares a rich cultural heritage with us, as well as common concerns on migration,” Prici noted. Likewise, according to Mexico’s Cultural Attaché, Hector Alcantara, the best way to bring two peoples closer is through cultural exchange.
