Digital archaeology: Virtual tours introduced for archaeological sites

Tirana, October 2 – As part of the European Heritage Days, a cultural event was held at Kamenica Tumulus in Korça County. The event, “Digital Archaeology: Photogrammetry, 3D Terrain, and Virtual Tours,” highlighted the use of digital tools for archaeological sites.
Digitalization protects sites from illegal excavations, supports preservation and maintenance, and promotes them through virtual tours.
Elson Salihaj, GIS expert, explained that drone and ground camera images create realistic terrain models. He said these models include orthophotos, 3D terrain, and detailed site elements.
The project aims to digitalize all archaeological sites in Korça County. Virtual tours will allow tourists who cannot visit in person to explore the sites. This initiative will also support tourism development.
Florenc Cenolli, archaeologist, said tourists should experience not only local cuisine but also cultural heritage, traditions, and archaeological treasures.
The activity adds value for local guides, municipal administrators, urban planners, and all enthusiasts of culture, history, and science.
