5th Conference of Bank of Albania Museum: Sejko – EU Path a Core Reform Pillar

As part of the 100th anniversary of Albania’s central bank, the 5th Conference of the Bank of Albania Museum took place today under the theme: “Central Banks and Economic History: Reflections and Perspectives.”

The event brought together local and foreign researchers, along with experts from regional central banks. They discussed the evolving role of central banks and economic history across the 19th to 21st centuries.

Governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sejko, opened the conference. He thanked economists, civil servants, researchers, and artists whose work shaped the institution’s identity.

“We are grateful for their contribution to building the institution. Equally, we appreciate the researchers who documented this journey,” Sejko said. He mentioned key figures including economist Haxhi Shkoza, academic and former bank director Dhimitër Pasko, Professor Aristotel Panos, co-curator of the 20th and 21st-century museum sections, and authors of the Bank’s official history. He also cited Professors Iljaz Fishta and Kristo Frashëri for their ongoing contributions to the history of Albanian banking.

Moving forward, Sejko stressed the importance of dialogue. By bringing together historians, museum professionals, economists, and researchers, the conference offered fresh perspectives on how monetary institutions evolve. It also examined how monetary decisions shape outcomes and how institutions build and maintain trust. According to Sejko, the conference addressed not only the past but also raised important questions for the future.

He then emphasized Albania’s path toward EU integration. This, he said, has remained a central pillar of both institutional and economic reforms. The Bank of Albania plays a key role in this process by aligning its policies and practices with European standards. This alignment aims to boost stability, transparency, and resilience, key elements for EU membership.

Looking ahead, Sejko reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment. “We aim to strengthen institutional readiness, deepen regional cooperation, and ensure our financial system is ready to face challenges and seize the opportunities of a future within the EU,” he said.

He noted that new challenges, such as digital currencies, climate risks, artificial intelligence, and financial innovation, are reshaping the global financial landscape. Albania, he added, is no exception. The next decades will require skill, foresight, and strong cooperation with European and international partners.

“We must continue to enhance our institutional capacity. Not only to meet our core mandate, but also to support the stability and well-being of Albanian citizens,” concluded Governor Sejko.

The conference focused on topics such as the origins of banking systems in the Balkans, the impact of historical events, and the influence of international financial institutions on monetary policy and central banks in Albania and the region.
