The University of Tirana was inaugurated on 15 September 1957, 68 years ago.

On the inauguration day, the facilities opened not only for students and faculty but also for residents of Tirana, who visited the faculties, departments, and laboratories.

At its inception, the university had six faculties. Authorities traced the origins of Albania’s first higher education institution to 1946, with the establishment of the two-year Higher Pedagogical Institute, and to 1947, with the opening of the Institute of Sciences.

The Council of Ministers formally established the university on 30 May 1957. Between 1946 and 1956, six higher institutes operated in Tirana: the Pedagogical, Polytechnic, Medical, Agricultural, Economic, and Legal Institutes. The university emerged from the merger of these institutes. A large number of professors trained abroad contributed to preparing new generations of students.
