Undiscovered works of Guri Madhi are exhibited, among them, abstractions and nudes banned in the dictatorship

“Works on paper” made with pencil, pastel, oil, watercolor or mix, 53 creations of the painter Guri Madhi, were exhibited this evening at the Tirana Art Gallery, some of them previously undiscovered. Portraits, moments from the War, landscapes (of the village, from Kosovo, etc.), moments from everyday life, where there are also nudes (mainly male nudes) made during the 50s of the academic period, or the abstractions of a decade later.
Among them, a painting from 1967 made in oil on paper stands out, which contradicts the trend of socialist realism that was allowed during the communist system. During the dictatorship, these would have been forbidden works, but the artist has hidden them in his house. 3 and a half decades after the death of Guri Madhi, one of the most important artists in the history of local visual art, the works are revealed to the public, testifying through art, the beginnings of his artistic creativity, the academic period and the family portraits which he did not stop putting it on paper until ’87, a year before his death.
Among the family portraits,is that of Fillaret, his wife. The exhibited works span over half a century of the artist’s work and are part of the family collection.
