Archaeologists make an extraordinary discovery in Durrës, shedding light on the pre-Roman history of the city

Archaeologists have discovered ancient structures and artifacts at the construction site of the 9-year-old school “Eftali Koçi” in Durrës. The excavation reveals important ancient structures and artifacts, shedding new light on the pre-Roman and Roman history of Durrës.

As a result of the historic findings, the National Cultural Heritage Council ordered that any uncovered structure must be preserved in its original state. This discovery was a challenge for the construction of the 9-year-old school “Eftali Koçi”, as it required the relocation of the building and the rethinking of its design.
Archeologist Pojani and her team also discovered artifacts of urban and extra-urban religious life, highlighting the importance of the city’s religion, along with a complex system of roads and buildings, showing its impressive urban planning.
After the presentation of the findings, the Ministry of Culture decided to preserve the complete wall and tower of the archaic Hellenistic era and move the foundations of the school to an uninhabited area, to allow visitors to visit the discoveries.

In addition to the wall structures, many artifacts were collected at the site during archaeological excavations. Specialists are now working to process the findings.
