Great Kukës Bridge Set to Boost Tourism and Improve Traffic on Nation’s Road

The Great Kukës Bridge, one of Albania’s most modern infrastructure projects, is ready to handle heavy tourist traffic and road flow on the Nation’s Road. It replaces the old bridge built in 1978.

Prime Minister Edi Rama shared photos today of the new bridge spanning the Drin River in Kukës. This project stands out as one of the most innovative and important in Albania’s road infrastructure.

Italian architect Giorgio Rizzo designed the bridge to solve a key connection point on the national highway. It will greatly ease traffic in an area that relied on a structure built over 45 years ago, before the Fierza dam.

The bridge was built offsite and floated into position using a rare engineering method. This floating technique makes the project unique in the region and one of the few like it in Europe.

The structure has two strong concrete foundations on the lake’s shores. Its length features a large metal arch without any intermediate supports. This design provides high stability and an impressive architectural look.

The project cost about 40 million Euros, including two access roads for entry and exit.

The Great Kukës Bridge will boost tourism and ease transport on one of Albania’s main routes. It will also strengthen ties between Albania and Kosova.
