General Directorate of Archives Honors Human Rights History

On the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Advocate Institution, the General Directorate of Archives opened a special documentary exhibition. The exhibition highlights the history of human rights in Albania.
It features rare archival documents that trace the development of Albanian legislation on fundamental rights and freedoms. These range from the formation of the modern state to the Kosovo War.
The exhibition shows the vital role of archives in preserving institutional memory. It also documents efforts to build a fairer and more democratic society.
Moreover, it serves as a reminder that the protection of human rights is a constant challenge. It is also a duty that requires awareness and responsibility.
Among the most notable documents on display are:
– The royal decree banning face coverings for women (March 9, 1937)
– The declaration on the protection of minorities in Albania (1921)
– The Prime Minister’s order to collect evidence on human rights violations in Kosovo (1999)
– A resolution from the Council of Europe calling for the release of political prisoners in Eastern Europe, and others.
