Elbasan in the 20th Century” Exhibition Opens at the Ethnographic Museum

The Ethnographic Museum of Elbasan recently opened the exhibition “Elbasan in the 20th Century”. It presented key elements of the city’s cultural heritage.

The exhibition featured black-and-white photographs reflecting the organization of Elbasan’s Historic Center during the 20th century. The images highlighted traditional clothing worn by men and women, as well as the city’s characteristic houses and artisan shops. These visuals offered visitors a nostalgic journey into the past.

Historically known as Skampis, Elbasan lies at the heart of Albania. It is one of the oldest urban centers in the country, rich in cultural and historical significance.

Located on the right bank of the Shkumbin River, at 120 meters above sea level, the city occupies a strategically important site. Elbasan served as a key station along the Via Egnatia and was first mentioned in the 2nd century AD. A gravestone belonging to the Roman legionary Marcus Sabitus, preserved in the museum, confirms the city’s ancient name. Scholars recognize it as the only epigraphic monument that mentions Skampis.

Today, Elbasan is widely recognized as the cultural center of the Dita e Verës (Summer Day), a traditional pagan festival that finds its most authentic and vibrant expression in this historic city.
