“Tana,” 67 Years Since Albania’s First Full-Length Film

On July 17, 1958, Albania premiered its first fully Albanian-produced feature film, “Tana”.
The film, released under the banner “Shqipëria Film,” was directed by Kristaq Dhamo with a screenplay by novelist Fatmir Gjata. It marked the true beginning of Albanian cinema, featuring Albanian directors, actors, and crew.
Writers Fatmir Gjata and Nasho Jorgaqi collaborated with director Kristaq Dhamo to develop the script. The film addresses one of the most pressing social issues of the time: collectivization in rural areas. It also reflects changes in various aspects of Albanian social life.
The lead roles featured Tinka Kurti as Tana, Naim Frashëri as Stefan, Kadri Roshi as Lefter, and Andon Pano as the agricultural cooperative chairman. The story revolves around village life, where traditional mentalities threaten the love between two young people.
“Tana” is remembered not only as Albania’s first cinematic production but also for a famously discussed kissing scene between two actors.
The film’s music was composed by Çesk Zadeja. It remains one of the most influential works in the history of Albanian cinema.
