Performative Exhibition in Pogradec: 9 Artists in Research Residency

Tirana Art Lab is opening a special exhibition in Pogradec, bringing together nine visual artists.

Titled “Performative Exhibition #5 – Lyhnida – Lake of Light”, the project sets up a week-long research residency. It will culminate in the creation of new artworks and a public exhibition at the city’s art gallery.

Participants include artists, curators, and activists: Bora Baboçi, Adela Demetja, Genc Kadriu, Denisa Kasa, Anastas Kostandini, Ledia Kostandini, Mariana Kostandini, Fabio Toska, and Ilir Tsouko.

The focus lies on Lake Ohrid, Europe’s oldest natural lake, estimated to be 4 million years old. The project highlights the lake’s natural and cultural importance, while also addressing the risks threatening this UNESCO-protected ecosystem.

Through an innovative format, the initiative combines artist residency, production of new works, and a public presentation. It promotes sustainable artistic practices and raises awareness about protecting the lake.

The project’s title refers to Lychnidos, the ancient name of Ohrid, derived from the Greek ‘lychnos’, meaning “lamp” or “light,” in reference to the lake’s clarity and brightness.

Tirana Art Lab created the “Performative Exhibition” format to unpack traditional exhibition models. It emphasizes artistic and curatorial processes through performance and proposes new forms of collaboration and display beyond the exhibition event.

The project opens on July 26 and remains on view for the public from July 27 to August 5 at the Pogradec Art Gallery. The Ministry of Economy, Culture and Innovation is supporting the initiative.
