Lake Shkodra One Step Closer to UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Status

A joint final conference took place in Montenegro to prepare the nomination file for the designation of Lake Shkodra as a Transboundary Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO.

The conference gathered over 70 participants. These included stakeholders, local actors, donors, experts, relevant ministries, and the UNESCO Secretariat.

The Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Shkodra announced that the nomination files are ready for submission to the respective ministries. These documents support two key components: presenting the project’s results and achievements, and agreeing on the next steps for establishing the Shkodra Lake Watershed – Transboundary Biosphere Reserve (SLW–TBR).

The final conference aimed to showcase project outcomes and deliver a strong message of regional cooperation and commitment to the public. Through the Biosphere Reserve program, sustainable green development is achievable. However, it requires a shift in mindset and behavior. Cooperation and harmonized partnerships among stakeholders remain essential for success.

At the end of the conference, a fair on culture and nature highlighted the region’s rich potential as a future Biosphere Reserve.
