13th-Century Monastery in Apollonia Draws Pilgrims and Travelers

The Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos, located in the Archaeological Park of Apollonia, dates back to the 13th century. It represents a vital part of Albania’s rich history and cultural heritage.
The monastery belongs to the Metropolis of Apollonia and Fier. It serves a large Orthodox community. Just a few days ago, the faithful celebrated the Transfiguration of the Savior (known locally as “Shën Sotiri”) on August 5 and 6.
Believers joined the “Great Vespers” and the ritual blessing of the five loaves.
The area is home to many churches and monasteries that are declared Cultural Monuments.
During a visit to Fier, travelers should not miss three of Albania’s most renowned Orthodox monasteries. These are true cultural treasures. One of them is the Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Apollonia. The other two include the Monastery of Ardenica, from the 11th century, and the Monastery of Saint Cosmas in Libofshë, built in 1815. Both attract pilgrims from the region and beyond national borders.
These monasteries reflect the legacy of prominent historical figures and showcase Byzantine architecture. Additionally, two of the most famous churches in Myzeqe—Saint George (Libofshë, 1767) and Saint Nicholas (Libofshë, 1777)—feature works by renowned Byzantine artists like Shpataraku, the Zografi brothers, and the Çetiri family.
