Albanian Artists, Guests of Honour at France’s “Perigord Noir” Festival in France

Albania is the guest of honour at the 43rd edition of the International Classical Music Festival “Perigord Noir.” This event takes place in the picturesque Dordogne region of France.
Over the past weekend, the Quartet of the Armed Forces Symphony Orchestra performed together with mezzo-soprano Flaka Goranci. This festival gathers artists and ensembles from around the world. Alongside Goranci were Vilson Guri, Erbi Piranaj, Stela Bello, and Bashkim Kupi.
The festival’s organisers praised the Albanian performers. They said Albanian melodies, performed with rare elegance by mezzo-soprano Flaka Goranci and the sensitive strings of the TOGHA Quartet, revealed a sonic universe deeply rooted in the spirit of the people. Furthermore, this folk repertoire celebrates love, nature, and life. These universal themes come alive through rich musical writing. The music is ornate, free, and full of nostalgia.
On 16 August, the festival will host a literary meeting focused on the works of writer Ismail Kadare. Tedi Papavrami and Ornela Vorpsi will attend. Notably, Papavrami will take part not only as an instrumentalist but also as the translator of Kadare’s works. Before the discussion, young Albanian violinist Vesa Dume, aged 13, will perform a short concert.
Concerts at the festival happen in historic churches and cultural monuments. Thus, the event blends music with the region’s architectural heritage.
Since 2016, conductor Inaki Encina Oyon has led the musical direction of the Perigord Noir Academy. In 2023, Julien Kieffer took over as the festival’s artistic director.
Perigord Noir is a region in southeastern Dordogne, France. It is known for dark forests, rich history, and cultural attractions. Moreover, it is a popular tourist destination. Visitors come for its medieval towns, castles, prehistoric sites, and gastronomy.
