Historic “St. Nicholas” Church in Voskopoja Restored to Former Glory

The Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Korçë has completed conservation work at the Church of “St. Nicholas” in Voskopoja. The team restored the colors, details, and clarity of frescoes once hidden under layers of inscriptions.

“This proves how much beauty we can bring back when we care for our heritage,” DRTK Korçë wrote on social media. They also shared the recovered image of a saint.

Builders erected the Church of “St. Nicholas” in 1721. It is one of Voskopoja’s finest monuments and lies only 20 minutes from Korçë. Frescoes by David Selenica and the Zografi brothers, its post-Byzantine architecture, and the unique porch decoration make it a must-see for history and art lovers.

The church stands in the heart of Voskopoja. It remains the most important example of post-Byzantine basilica architecture in the area. It preserves the nave, narthex, arcade, and bell tower.

Master Kostandin Ieromonaku carved its iconostasis between 1722 and 1726. He was one of the greatest icon painters of the early 18th century. Today, some original icons are displayed at the National Museum of Medieval Art in Korçë.
